OA – Voices for Change

Opera Australia has been sponsored by IBM for many years and the partnership has been highlighted by many memorable events.

In 1935, Napier Waller completed 10 murals for Sidney Myer’s new store in Bourke Street, Melbourne, celebrating the role of women in the arts, industry and commerce. So it was appropriate that the murals were the Valerie’s design inspiration for the ‘Voices for Change’ dinner in 2012 at the Myer Mural Hall.

The dinner was an event for Champions for Change, a program established in 2010 by Elizabeth Broderick, Sex Discrimination Commissioner, to provide national leadership and influence and to support her work in promoting equality for women and girls in Australia.

‘Voices for Change’ featured IBM Managing Director Andrew Stevens, Elizabeth Broderick and opera star Antoinette Halloran. Guests were welcomed by a model in a specially commissioned red carpet gown. Waller’s murals were brought vividly to life by young dance students.

The menus featured a detail of a Waller murals which also infused the colours and textures of the elegant table setting and centrepieces.
